Hailed as the Fruit Basket of the Philippines, Davao is one of the world's leading producers and exporters of banana, papaya, mangosteen, and even flowers. Davao's rich fertile volcanic soil makes it most suitable for sustained production of the freshest and tastiest tropical fruits in the Philippines. Since the fruits are locally produced, the prices are comparably much cheaper than anywhere in the country.

Davao has been considered as the "durian capital of the Philippines" as the controversial fruit (which "smells like hell but tastes like heaven," according to one scribe) is grown extensively.

Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Ramon R. Jimenez, Jr. revealed that DOT will be developing Davao as the “largest fruit market in Asia”.

One of Davao's economic allies is agriculture despite the fact it is a city (with a total land area of 2,444 square kilometers). As a matter of fact, agriculture accounted for almost half (roughly 48 percent) of the city's economy.

Secretary Jimenez said that the decision springs from a frequently asked question: Where does this fruit come from?  And the answer is always Davao. So they finally decided, that Davao host the largest fruit market in Asia.
